About Hatteras Island

The Outer Banks of North Carolina are stunningly beautiful. These remarkable barrier islands are located off the coast of North Carolina.  They separate the mainland from the Atlantic Ocean and span over 200 miles.  Hatteras Island is one of these islands and its gorgeous beaches  make it a spectacular vacation destination!    The beauty of Hatteras Island has been wowing visitors for many years as generation after generation return to enjoy vacations here.   

 

Hatteras Island is a wonderful place for a memorable OBX family vacation or a romantic getaway.  The island features many activities each year including festivals, live music, fishing tournaments, craft fairs and art shows. There are museums, shipwrecks, historical sites and lighthouses to visit.  Water sports are also extremely popular here and offer many options.  You will also find unique shops and even horseback riding on the beach!  The fishing here is awesome whether on the beach,  off a pier or by charter boat.  There are also many wonderful restaurants located on the island for guests to enjoy.  The seafood here is incredibly fresh but there are plenty of restaurants that serve other options as well.

 

Whether you want to explore the island and all the treasures it holds or just want to relax on the beach, Hatteras Island has it all!  A vacation here is sure to delight as you make wonderful memories that will last a lifetime!

Historic Attractions

Visit Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station 

This historic site can be seen from SEAcret TreasureThe Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is a must see!  The 1874 Life Saving Station was the first operational one built in North Carolina.  It served until 1954 and is the largest and most complete example of these life-saving stations in the nation.  A trip to this historical site is like a window to the past.   Each Thursday  at 2PM (Memorial Day - Labor Day) visitors can see  the Breeches Buoy Apparatus Drill.  Visitor hours are: April - November; Monday  - Friday 10AM - 5PM, and Saturday 11AM - 4PM.

Visit the Lighthouses!

There are three lighthouses located on Cape Hatteras National Seashore which is part of  the US National Park Service.

 

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Bodie Island Lighthouse are open to the public for self guided climbs.  These two lighthouses are open seasonally starting the third Friday in April through Columbus Day.  The hours are 9AM - 5PM daily.

The third lighthouse is the Ocracoke Island Lighthouse and is not open for climbing.

Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located just past the ferry docks at the end of Highway 12 at 59200 Museum Drive, Hatteras Village.  The building is shaped like a ship with windows that look like portholes!  This museum focuses on the shipwrecks off the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the maritime history of the area. The exhibits on display cover the span of five centuries.  Visitor hours are: First Monday in April - September; Monday - Saturday 10AM - 5PM.  Hours from first Monday in October through March are Monday - Saturday 10AM - 4PM.  The admission is free with donations being welcome!

Visit the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center

This museum features the Native American culture and Native American history of Hatteras Island. It is full of collections and artifacts that preserve this rich history.  There is also a gift shop here that carries many Native American made items.  This is a wonderful museum!  Visitor hours: January - week prior to Easter, Saturday & Sunday, 10:30AM- 5PM.  The week after Easter - December, Tuesday - Saturday, 10:30AM - 5PM.

Get a beautiful start to your day by watching the sunrise on the beach!  You can admire the spectacular view while enjoying your morning coffee!  SEAcret Treasure is just 100 footsteps from the beautiful and uncrowded beach!

Guests are  welcome to use the wide variety of beach gear and beach toys we have available here at SEAcret TreasureWe want our guests to have an wonderful time at the beach!  Take a picnic lunch, play some games, fly a kite or take a walk and collect some beautiful shells and sea glass!  Maybe just kick back, relax and enjoy the awesome beauty of the beach!

Enjoy a bonfire on the beach!  It is so much fun to gather family and friends around a bonfire!  Listen to the waves, tell some stories, roast some hotdogs and make S'mores!  Take a flashlight and look for ghost crabs!  A perfect way to spend an evening at the beach!  Permit is required.  It is free and available online.

Have some fun at the new Highway 12 Amusements

There is plenty of family fun to be found here!  There is a 45-foot tall rock climbing wall outside on the side of the building and an 18 hole mini golf course right on the sound. Inside you will find laser tag, bowling, and a wide variety of arcade games.  Playing these games will produce tickets which can be used to claim prizes.  Ice cream is served here too!  Highway 12 Amusements is a great choice on a rainy day or perhaps in the evening after a day on the beach!

 Spend the day at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pea Island by SEAcret Treasure is home to the most amazing wildlife!  Hatteras Island, North Carolina.

This beautiful wild life refuge was established in 1938.  It provides a protective habitat and environment for many species of birds and endangered species such as Loggerhead sea turtles.  The natural beauty of the beach is breathtaking. Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is open to the public so please take advantage of the opportunity to see the wild life that thrives here.  This is a bird watchers paradise as more than 365 species of birds can be seen here!  This beautiful refuge is 13 miles long, spanning 5,834 acres of land and 25,700 acres of Proclamation Boundary waters.  Wide open and stunning!  Take a picnic and enjoy the wonderful scenery on the beach or take a hike on the wildlife trails.  You will want to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. This place is perfect for wildlife observation and photo opportunities!  The refuge is open from sunrise to sunset.

Experience the thrill of water sports on Hatteras Island

Water sports are extremely popular here on Hatteras Island!  Spend the day perfecting your skills or learning a new sport.  This is the perfect place to have a fun day of water sports regardless of your experience level.

Check out the Catch of the Day at Oregon Inlet

Charter boats bring their catch of day back to Oregon Inlet each afternoon.  Plan to arrive between 3:30 – 4PM and watch as the boats return to show off the fish they caught.  These can include some pretty big fish!   Guests of SEAcret Treasure often mention how much their children enjoyed seeing this!  This is such a fun thing to do with the whole family!  Seeing the fish, listening to the fish stories and seeing the big boats.

Fun Day Trips

Ocracoke Island

Take the ferry to Ocracoke Island for the day!  This charming island is fairly small but appears much larger due to the wide open pristine beaches.  You will want to plan to arrive early to take full advantage of the day here. Rent a bike, golf cart or scooter to check out the many historic sites, unique boutiques and restaurants.  Plan to spend some time on the expansive beaches!  This is a fun day trip.  The ferry ride is free but you will need to arrive early as it is first come first served!  Plan to arrive at the ferry to take the 8AM trip.  This will put you on Ocracoke by about 9AM so you have plenty of time to enjoy all the fun things to do.  The Ferry schedule is available online on  the North Carolina Department of Transportation website.

Enjoy a wide variety of exhibits at this wonderful aquarium!  So much to see!  From alligators, sea turtles and otters in the Wild Wetlands to sharks at the Graveyard of the Atlantic interactive Gulf stream exhibit.  A great rainy day activity and kids love it here!  Open daily 9AM- 5PM.

Visit Kitty Hawk, Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills

Take a ride off Hatteras Island and spend some time in Kitty Hawk and Nags Head.  These are much more touristy areas featuring an outlet mall and many stores and shops.  This area is also has many mini-golf courts, go cart tracks, movie theaters, fast food places as well as an assortment of restaurants.  This area is bustling with activity making it a fun-filled day trip.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial is located in Kill Devils Hill.  This is the place where Orville and Wilbur Wright spent so many years learning the secrets to fly.  This is the site where they successfully made that first flight!  This is a very popular tourist attraction.  The grounds at Wright Brothers National Memorial are open 9AM- 5PM.

While here plan to visit Jockeys Ridge State Park the tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic coast.  It is a great place to fly kites and perfect for sightseeing and beautiful sunsets.  There are vendors there to provide hang-gliding and Sandboarding is allowed with a permit.  Locate in the Nags Head at milepost 12 on Highway 158 Bypass.  The entrance to the park is via Carolista Drive.  Open daily 8AM - 9PM.

Wright Brothers National Memorial.jpg

Make plans to see The Lost Colony!  This is a wonderful OBX family activity!  The story is an OBX mystery about 117 English men, women and children that settled, on Roanoke Island, in 1587.  When supply ships returned in 1590 all of these colonists had vanished.  To this day, more than 400 years later, the mystery of where they went is still unsolved.  This story is played out each summer at an outdoor theater on the actual site it took place.  A must see on a visit to OBX!

Rainy Day Activities At The Beach!

Don't let a little rain spoil your fun!  There are plenty of fun rainy day activities to enjoy until you can get back out to the beach!  Many times the rain is just a passing shower!

Part of the main sundeck is undercover and watching the rain or a storm over the ocean is beautiful!

Enjoy a game of Air Hockey or Foosball in the game room.

Watch a movie or two!  Our guests love the wide variety of DVDs at the cottage.  It is always fun to watch Nights In Rodanthe while here!              

Have fun playing a game!  SEAcret Treasure has a great selection of card and board games for our guests to enjoy.  You can even play OBX-opoly here!

Relax with a good book!  We keep plenty of great  books at SEAcret Treasure for our guests to enjoy.  Nights In Rodanthe is always a fun choice!

Rainy days are great days to do some of the OBX indoor attractions!  Enjoy some shopping at the many local shops, boutiques  or the Tanger Outlet Mall* Please see the Shopping section for a list of OBX shops. Visit some historic sites and museums or  have some fun at the Highway 12 Arcade or the North Carolina Aquarium.
